FIRST National Bank (FNB), a leading South African
financial services provider, has extended its digital banking platform to seven
sub-Saharan African countries including Tanzania, following a successful
adoption in its home market.FNB launched its digital banking app two years ago
and has been able to attract over 600,000 subscribers so far.
Encouraged by the rapid adoption, the bank has
extended the service to seven other African countries including Botswana,
Zambia, Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho, Tanzania and Mozambique, citing keenness
to drive its cashless payment and electronic banking platforms across regional
subsidiaries.
The digital platform – which includes mobile banking
– has been propelled by the rapid smartphone penetration recorded in the
continent recently, according to a senior official at the bank.
South African news services, ITWeb quoted Michael
Kloeck, Head of Expansion at FNB Mobile and Connect as saying,”[The higher the
penetration] the more people will have access to these devices to be able to
transact using our digital channels.”
According to Kloeck this will ultimately bring
digital banking to Africa in preparation for the future.
